In 1978 he began as a wireline field engineer in Far East. His first 14 years were in operations and technical management throughout the Far East and Middle East, including wireline, testing, completions and well intervention activities.
In 1992 he moved to Aberdeen to lead business development and managed projects for Schlumberger, where the North Sea business success led to formation of a new global segment in 1995, Integrated Project Management. From 1995 through 1999 Charlie was seconded to BP North Sea as Wells Team Leader (Drilling Manager) for the ETAP project, at the time the largest Schlumberger project in the world.
Following completion of the ETAP drilling program in 1999, Charlie became marketing manager for the just acquired company Camco International. This was followed by headquarters marketing and technology assignments for new business areas Schlumberger was moving into, including well completions, artificial lift and ‘production operations of the future’.
In 2010 he became director of marketing communications and managed the integration of marketing and brand of the acquired company Smith International, a 23,000 strong, $11bn oilfield service company. He completed his career as marketing & brand integration manager for the acquired company Cameron international.
